Blood spots

What are blood blisters?

Blood spots , also called capillary tears or pinpoint hemangiomas, are small red or purple spots that appear on the skin. They are caused by the rupture of small blood vessels (capillaries) under the skin, resulting in blood pooling in a localized area. Blood spots can vary in size, from tiny dots to small, visible spots.

Blood spots are usually harmless and often disappear on their own, although they may sometimes leave slight discoloration. If a blood spot persists, is painful, or occurs frequently, it may be helpful to consult a healthcare professional to determine the cause and discuss treatment options.

Examples of blood spots

Petechiae

These are tiny red or purple spots (usually the size of a pinhead) that appear on the skin or mucous membranes. They are caused by capillary hemorrhage under the skin. Petechiae can be triggered by minor trauma, infections, or clotting disorders.

Purpura

Purpura are red or purple spots, slightly larger than petechiae, which also result from bleeding under the skin. Purpura can be linked to blood clotting disorders, infections, or drug reactions.

Cherry angiomas

Also called senile hemangiomas, these small, smooth, red growths are caused by a proliferation of blood vessels on the surface of the skin. They are common in adults and increase with age. They are benign and generally harmless.

Superficial bruises

Although they are usually larger than other examples, some small bruises, especially if caused by light pressure or minor injury, can resemble blood spots due to the localized accumulation of blood under the skin.

Photorejuvenation

Photorejuvenation may be useful in treating certain types of blood spots, including those caused by dilated or visible blood vessels under the skin, such as petechiae, purpuras, and cherry angiomas.

Photorejuvenation typically uses intense pulsed light ( IPL ) or specific lasers to target dilated blood vessels. The light energy is absorbed by hemoglobin in the blood, causing the dilated blood vessels to clot. These vessels are then naturally absorbed by the body, reducing or eliminating the appearance of blood spots.
