What are stretch marks?
Stretch marks are lines or streaks that appear on the skin due to the rapid stretching of the dermis, often caused by rapid growth, weight gain, pregnancy, or hormonal fluctuations. They typically appear on areas such as the abdomen, thighs, hips, breasts, lower back, and arms.
Stretch marks often begin as red, purple, or pink, and gradually fade to white or silver over time. They result from the rupture of collagen and elastin fibers in the skin. While not harmful to health, they can be a cosmetic concern for some people.
Examples of stretch marks
Red or purple stretch marks
These stretch marks are recent and indicate that they are still in an inflammatory phase. They may appear red, pink, or purple, and are often more visible on fair skin.
White or silver stretch marks
Over time, stretch marks lose their reddish color and become white or silvery. They are generally older and less visible on fair skin, but can remain quite pronounced on darker skin.
Stretch marks on the stomach
Common in pregnant women, they often appear around the abdomen, where the skin has been stretched considerably.
Stretch marks on the breasts
They can appear after pregnancy or significant weight fluctuations, as the skin in this area is sensitive and prone to stretching.
Treatment for stretch marks
TWIST
Microneedling
TWIST microneedling is a variation of traditional microneedling, using a specific device to create micro-perforations in the skin with a rotating or "twist" motion. This type of microneedling aims to improve treatment effectiveness by allowing for more uniform and controlled needle penetration.
TWIST microneedling can indeed be beneficial for treating stretch marks. By stimulating collagen and elastin production in a more targeted and intense way, this treatment can help reduce the appearance of stretch marks, especially those that are recent or moderately deep. As with traditional microneedling , several sessions may be necessary to achieve optimal results.
